Rules about women who have land

1 Gilead was the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh. And Manasseh was Joseph’s son. The leaders of the families in Gilead’s clan went to Moses and to the other leaders of the Israelites‘clans. 2 And they said, ‘The LORD told you, my master, that we should use lots to give the land to the Israelites. Then each man’s land would become his sons’ land when he died. And the LORD told you, my master, that you should give Zelophehad’s land to his daughters. Zelophehad was in our clan. 3 But if the girls marry, the land will become their husbands’ land. If they marry men from other tribes, the tribe of Manasseh will lose the land. 4 They are girls. So their land will become part of the land that their husbands already have.’

5 The LORD told Moses what he should say to these men. Moses said, ‘What you are saying is right. 6 This is what the LORD has said about the daughters of Zelophehad: “Let them marry men that they want to marry. But they must marry men from the clans of their father’s tribe.” 7 So none of the Israelites‘land that is one tribe‘s land will become the land of another tribe. So the people in each tribe will keep the land that their ancestors had. 8 And that must happen to every daughter who gets some land of any tribe of the Israelites. She will be the wife of someone in a clan of her father’s tribe. So every Israelite will keep the land that was his ancestors‘land. 9 So none of the Israelites‘land that is one tribe‘s land will become the land of another tribe. So the people in each tribe will keep the land that their ancestors had.’

10 The daughters of Zelophehad did what the LORD had told to Moses. 11 Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad married sons of their father’s brothers. 12 They married men from the clans of the descendants of Joseph’s son Manasseh. And their land remained with the tribe of their father’s clan.

13 Those are the rules that the LORD gave to the Israelites. The LORD used Moses to give those rules to them when they were camping in Moab. They were camping on the flat ground in Moab by the River Jordan near Jericho.
